Abstract Mixed Media Paintings

I refer to my paintings as a geography of the heart and mind. Often times my art is informed by memories and my current thoughts. At other times, my paintings are inspired by the colors and sights around me, especially the ever changing sky and rural landscapes.

My work is about a sense of place, a place where one can go to be at home. With simple shapes (squares, rectangles, circles and lines) I create complex patterns reminiscent of imagined locales and spaces. At times, my work recalls idealized aerial views that one might see flying over rural areas. At other times, my work calls to mind atmospheric environments as if looking through and beyond the clouds.

I find inspiration in childhood memories: my mother and sisters sewing and working with fabric; the men and boys working together in the fields; the rural seasons of the year; my Czech heritage and growing up in a large, extended family. In many unforeseen ways, my move back to rural NW Connecticut from the cities of Philadelphia, Miami, and Washington, DC, has awakened these memories and emotions and they have now found their visual place. .

I feel a kinship with the abstract expressionists and color field painters of yesteryear as well as the print makers and minimalist artists of today.
